Common Causes of a Stiff uPVC Door Lock

The Door Has Dropped Slightly on Its Hinges

uPVC doors are heavy, and the hinges holding them are doing a lot of work every single day. Over time they loosen or wear, and the door drops by a couple of millimetres. That’s often enough to throw the whole locking mechanism out of line with the frame. You might notice the door dragging on the carpet or catching the frame before you ever notice the lock getting stiff. In most cases this is a straightforward hinge adjustment, not a hinge replacement.

The Keep Is Misaligned

The “keeps” are the small metal plates set into the door frame that the lock’s hooks, bolts or rollers engage into when you turn the key. If the door has dropped, the frame has moved, or the uPVC has swollen slightly, the keeps and the moving parts of the lock stop lining up. The lock has to fight to find its home, and that fight is what you feel as stiffness. A keep adjustment (loosening, shifting slightly, retightening) usually sorts it without touching the lock itself.

The Multipoint Locking Mechanism Is Worn

Most uPVC doors use a multipoint lock, commonly a GU mechanism, that fires several hooks, bolts or rollers into the frame at once when you turn the key. The gearbox that drives all of this is a mechanical part, and mechanical parts wear out after years of daily use. A failing gearbox usually gets steadily stiffer rather than failing outright, and can seize completely if it’s ignored for too long. It’s normally a gearbox swap, not a full lock or door replacement.

The Cylinder or Key Is Worn

The cylinder is the part the key actually goes into, and both the pins inside it and the key itself wear down over years of use. A worn key can feel stiff in a perfectly healthy lock, and cutting a fresh key from the original often solves it outright. If every key you own is stiff in the same lock, the cylinder is the more likely culprit. Cylinders are cheap, standardised parts, so replacing one is quick and doesn’t involve stripping out the rest of the mechanism.

Dirt, Dust or Lack of Lubrication

Locks need lubricating occasionally, and it’s usually the last thing anyone thinks about until there’s a problem. Dust and general household grit work their way into the mechanism over time, and whatever lubricant was there when the door was fitted eventually dries out. This is one of the few causes on this list you can often sort yourself, more on that shortly.

Weather and Temperature Changes

uPVC expands and contracts with temperature more than most people expect. A door that locks perfectly in summer can feel noticeably tighter during a cold snap as the frame contracts, and the reverse can happen in a heatwave. If the stiffness comes and goes with the weather rather than being constant, this is often the explanation, and it doesn’t necessarily mean anything needs fixing. Stiffness that stays the same regardless of temperature usually points to one of the causes above instead.

Is It Safe to Keep Using a Stiff Lock?

For a short time, yes, but it’s not something to leave indefinitely. The real risk isn’t the stiffness itself, it’s what happens when someone (understandably) starts putting more force into the key or handle to compensate. That’s the single most common way a manageable stiff lock turns into a snapped key, a sheared connecting rod, or a gearbox that’s gone from hard to turn to not turning at all.

Once that happens, you’ve gone from a straightforward adjustment or single part swap to an emergency lockout, usually at a higher cost and often outside normal hours. A lock that isn’t securing properly is also worth taking seriously from a security point of view, not just a convenience one.

If it’s still turning with steady, gentle pressure, it’s fine to keep using while you sort a fix. If it’s fighting you every time, that’s the point to stop forcing it and get it looked at.

What You Can Check Yourself First

A few of these take two minutes and can save you a call-out altogether.

  • Look for a visible gap. Stand outside and check whether the door sits flush against the frame all the way round, top and bottom. A gap in one corner but not the other is a strong sign the door has dropped and points straight at hinges or keeps as the cause.
  • Lift the handle fully before turning the key. This catches more people out than anything else on this list. Multipoint locks need the handle lifted right to the top to engage the hooks and rollers before the key will turn. A half-lifted handle can feel exactly like a stiff or faulty lock when the mechanism is actually fine.
    Try a different key if you have one. If a spare key turns more easily than your usual one, the key itself is worn, not the lock. Worth ruling out before you assume the worst.
  • Lubricate the right way. A dry lock benefits from a squirt of PTFE or silicone based lock lubricant (or a little graphite powder) into the keyway and around the visible moving parts. Avoid WD-40 here. It’s a solvent, not a proper lubricant, and while it can free things up briefly, it evaporates quickly and tends to attract more dust and grime into the mechanism over time, often making things worse a few weeks later.

What not to do: don’t force the key or handle, and don’t take the mechanism apart yourself. Both tend to turn a simple fix into a bigger one.

When to Call a Professional

A few signs mean it’s time to stop troubleshooting and get someone qualified to look at it:

  • It’s getting steadily worse, rather than staying the same or coming and going with the weather
  • You hear grinding, clicking, or resistance from inside the door when you turn the key, that’s usually the gearbox telling you it’s on its way out
  • The handle won’t lift all the way, even when you’re doing it properly, which points to a mechanical fault rather than technique
  • You’ve tried lubricating and it hasn’t helped, meaning the cause is mechanical (hinges, keeps, gearbox, cylinder) rather than a dry lock
  • The door isn’t securing fully in one or more places, which is a security issue as much as a convenience one

Any of these point to a hinge adjustment, keep realignment, or a part replacement (gearbox or cylinder), rather than anything you can safely sort with WD-40 and a bit of patience. Catching it at this stage is also normally the difference between a routine repair and an emergency lockout later on.
