A window that sticks, draughts or won’t lock is rarely beyond saving. Nine times out of ten the frame is sound and the problem is a worn handle, a tired hinge, a failed lock or a blown pane, all of which come apart and go back together far more cheaply than a replacement window.

Windows tend to fail slowly, so the warning signs are easy to live with until they aren’t. If any of these sound familiar, a repair now is cheaper than the alternative later.

Plenty of people expect to be told they need new windows. Most of the time they don’t.

A repair is the answer when the frame is sound and the fault is a handle, hinge, lock, seal or pane. That covers the overwhelming majority of the windows we see, and it is a fraction of the cost of replacing the whole unit. A perfectly good frame does not need to go in a skip because a handle has snapped.

Replacement only makes sense when the frame itself has warped, rotted or been damaged beyond a sensible repair. If that turns out to be your situation we will tell you honestly, but we will always look at fixing what you have first. A smashed pane or a window that won’t shut is not a job that waits. We work seven days a week and keep room in the diary for the ones that can’t be left.
